I am excited to announce that we have received the final approvals needed to launch Hershey Medical Center’s five-year strategic plan on July 1. Every faculty member and employee will help to meet the goals tied to this plan, which positions the Medical Center for success in the future.

As Penn State Health expands to provide exceptional care to patients across the region and state, we will define the role our Medical Center will play as the academic hub for our growing system. We bring unique services to central Pennsylvania because we combine specialized patient care with research, clinical trials and an exceptional medical college.

Four key focus areas––innovation, staff experience, patient experience and performance––serve as the foundation for the strategic plan. Leaders will be meeting with their teams to discuss how each department or unit will work together to set goals and develop strategies to support the plan. From improving the patient experience and identifying work efficiencies to offering innovative ideas and collaborating across departments––your involvement will be critical.

Moving forward, all that we do will be driven by the priorities in the plan. During the next five years, Hershey Medical Center will:

  1. Accelerate access to cutting-edge medical therapies, technologies and health care delivery systems that transform the health care of the community.
  2. Create an exceptional work environment that engages faculty and staff in decision-making, supports well-being and fosters team work and belonging.
  3. Drive growth and patient loyalty through rigorous adoption of patient- and family-centered care.
  4. Unlock the full potential of the academic medical center to maximize the value of care we provide to patients.

In the coming weeks, I will team up with Dr. Kevin Black, interim dean at the Penn State College of Medicine, to share information about the ways that the Medical Center strategic plan and the College strategic plan will align.

I look forward to hearing about the ways that you and your team are preparing to advance this important initiative and pave the way for a dynamic future.
